Joseph Stanley Butterworth

Joseph Stanley Butterworth, M.D., age 86, of Camden, TN, passed away on January 15, 2014 in Nashville, TN. Born March 9, 1927 in Lexington, Kentucky to parents Novella and Adolphus; he grew up in Murray, KY with two sisters and a brother. He graduated from Murray State University and Vanderbilt Medical School. After college he married Ben Arnold from Camden where they settled down and raised their four children, Stephen, Toni, Sharon and Annette. Dr. Butterworth's military service of more than 25 years involved four branches of the military - Army, Navy, Marines and Air National Guard. He actively served foreign duty in Korea and Germany. In 1975 he retired as Colonel from the Tennessee National Guard. His sense of adventure and desire to live life to the fullest included becoming a pilot, traveling, and camping. He and his late wife, Pauline Ross, enjoyed traveling in their RV and vacationing in Florida for over 20 years. Second to his love of medicine was being outside riding his tractor on the farm. Dr. Butterworth often expressed what an honor it was to serve his community by caring for his patients for more than 40 years in both Camden and Waverly and being actively involved in local and civic organizations. Survived by his brother John Paul Butterworth of Florida, daughters Toni (Robert) Caldwell of Nashville, Sharon (Jeff) Latendresse of Camden, Annette (Mike) Crout of Nashville, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Pauline Ross, sisters Joan Whayne and Jean Butterworth of Kentucky and son Stephen Butterworth of Texas. In order to honor his wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation scheduled. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers. Expressions of sympathy can be made through a donation to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association
